Wadou
In 708, Musashi Province presented natural copper, and to celebrate, the era name was changed to Wadou.
Already in 668, Echigo presented fuel water (oil),
and after that, the development of mines in various regions progressed, including gold in Mutsu, mercury in Ise, silver in Tsushima, and copper in Suo.
Wadokaichin
Japan’s first coin, minted in 708 (first year of Wadou).
The character chin is said to be an abbreviation of chin, or a variant of bin.
There were both silver and copper coins, and the government cast them at various locations, such as Yamashiro and Suo.
The twelve imperial sen coins
Wado-kaichin, Mannen-tsuho, Jingo-kaiho, Ryūhei-eihō,
Fuju-shinhō, Eiwa-chōhō, Nagato-daihō, Joeki-shinhō
The twelve types of copper coins, Jōgan-eihō, Kanpei-daihō, Enki-tsuhō, and Kengen-daihō, were minted by the Ritsuryo government.
